Returns and exchanges Policy

At Steph Wilks Costumier, we take pride in creating high-quality dance costumes and custom garments. This policy is designed to comply with New Zealand consumer laws, including the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986.

Your Rights Under New Zealand Consumer Law

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, customers are entitled to remedies if products are faulty, not fit for purpose, or do not match their description. These remedies may include repair, replacement, or refund depending on the issue.

The Fair Trading Act 1986 protects customers against misleading or deceptive conduct and false representations.

Additional guidance from the New Zealand Government can be found here:

Returns & Exchanges

Faulty, Damaged or Incorrect Items

If your item arrives faulty, damaged, or significantly different from what was ordered, please contact us within 7 days of receiving your order.

Where required under New Zealand law, we will provide an appropriate remedy which may include:

  • repair,

  • replacement, or

  • refund.

Minor faults may first be repaired within a reasonable timeframe. If the fault is substantial or cannot be remedied, you may choose a replacement or refund in accordance with the Consumer Guarantees Act.

To request a remedy, please provide:

  • your order number,

  • proof of purchase,

  • photographs of the issue where possible, and

  • a description of the fault.

Custom-Made & Made-to-Order Costumes

Many garments created by Steph Wilks Costumier are custom-made or altered specifically to customer measurements and requirements.

Because of the personalised nature of these items:

  • we do not offer refunds or exchanges for change of mind,

  • incorrect customer-supplied measurements,

  • changes in competition requirements, or

  • costume colour/style preferences after approval has been given.

However, your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act still apply if the garment is faulty or does not match the agreed description.

Change of Mind

Under New Zealand law, businesses are not required to provide refunds or exchanges for change of mind purchases.

At our discretion, we may offer:

  • an exchange,

  • alteration service, or

  • store credit

for eligible non-custom items returned in original condition within 14 days of purchase.

Items must:

  • be unworn and unused,

  • have all original tags attached,

  • be free from makeup, fake tan, deodorant, perfume, and damage.

Return shipping costs for change-of-mind purchases are the responsibility of the customer.

Sale Items

Sale, clearance, or discounted items are not eligible for change-of-mind returns or exchanges unless required under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Alterations & Fit Adjustments

Dance costumes are highly fitted garments. Minor fit adjustments may sometimes be required after delivery.

If a fitting issue occurs due to workmanship or deviation from agreed measurements, please contact us promptly so we can assess the best solution.

Customers may be responsible for shipping costs associated with alteration requests unless the issue falls under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
